Practical Research: Demographics and Target Market
Demographics
Location: Projected area is located in one of the four districts of Odessa - in Primorsky district, that is situated along the Black Sea coast. The project will be placed near Botanical Garden of the Odessa State University and between French Boulevard street and Healthy Trail route. The area of the district is 24, 2 sq. km. and includes historical city centre, sea coast, port and institutions.
Population density: The population of Odessa is 1 010 000 people and population density is 5, 823 residents per square kilometer.
Age: The average age of the population in Odessa is 38-39 years old. 21-22 % of the population are children and teenagers, 12% are adults between 18 and 29, 43% are adults between 30 and 59, and 23% people aged 60+.
Ethnic groups: The district is multicultural. In Odessa live 130 nationalities. The populations includes Ukrainians (about 70-80%), Russians (about 15-25%), Jews (about 5-7%), Bulgarians (about 2-3%), Moldovans, Greeks, Armenians and others.
Education and Employment: In the district about 60% of adults are employed people, 10-12% are students.
Disability: In Odessa 10% of the population has a disability.
Existing Cultural Location: National Fine Art Museum, Museum of Western and Eastern Art, Literary Museum, Cultural Centre, Gallery ‘Dim Khudozhnykiv’.
Target market
1. Students, as the area has a large number of institutions and they usually tend to explore something new.
2. Creative workers and freelancers, as this centre can become a creative hub for them.
3. Working residents, as they can visit the centre between working days.
4. Families with children, as they need educational and cultural activities.
5. Older residents, as they usually prefer calm activities.
6. Tourists, as they explore the city and its culture and this centre can become a part of their route.
The project location is in a busy and densely populated area with many universities and a high number of middle‑aged residents. This means the building will be visited mostly by students and working people. In summer there are many tourists, so the visitor flow can be higher during this season. The site is in the city centre with a lot of entertainment around, which means many people may come every day. The building is also close to a park, so the design and materials should fit the natural environment. Because a big part of the population has disabilities, the project must include ramps, barrier‑free access.
This research gave me the information that I have to consider , developing the project. I plan to create a ramp with a slope 5-7% and lifts, so disabled people can get an easy access. As this place might visited many tourist in summer time, the project should include bilingual signage. Also as the project is located next to Botanical Garden, it should include waste bins, clear signage, protective fencing where necessary to keep the area clean and safe.

Good that you have identified these elements, this research should be used in your Design Boards.
ReplyDeleteCould you include some information on the existing cultural locations in Odessa (you mentioned in an earlier post that Odessa has several of these).
Also, add some information on how you think this research can impact your design ideas. You mention disabled access, for example, how are you making your design accessible?
